Superintendent Success Sessions

MASA is sponsoring a series of workshops to provide assistance and support primarily for individuals who are new to the superintendency, however veteran superintendents may also find the information valuable as well.  The program is called the "Superintendent Success Program" and is an extension of the school finance seminars that MASA has offered in cooperation with MOASBO for many years.

The workshops will be led by individuals with expertise in the subject matter being presented.  The first four workshops will be held in Jefferson City and each will begin at 10:00 am and conclude by 2:00 pm.  The fifth session will be held at the Lodge of Four Seasons immediately preceding the MASA Spring Conference.  Below is a list of topics, presenters and issues to be covered:

Human Resources: Critical Employment Issues for New School Leaders

October 29, 2014 – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Jefferson City
Presenters: Susan Hladky, Ed.D., Assistant Superintendent for HR – Wentzville School District and 
Parker McKenna, SPHR, Chief Human Resources Officers – Springfield School District Topics: Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA); 

Topics: Unemployment compensation; Affordable Care Act implications; and employee evaluations.

Board Meetings: Your Monthly Penitence for Entering the Superintendency

December 12, 2014 – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Jefferson City
Presenters: Gary Wright, Ph.D. – Director, Superintendents Academy; 
Gerry Lee – Board Member, Springfield School District and Paul Ziegler, J.D. – Superintendent, Northwest R-1 School District

Topics: Developing a board agenda; review of Sunshine Law; superintendent evaluation and compensation; and strategies for working with difficult board members.

School Finance: Where Does the Money Come From (and Where Does It Go)?

Date: January 9, 2015 – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Jefferson City
Presenters: Dennis Lea, Ed.D., Saint Louis University and William Rebore, Ph.D., Saint Louis University 

Topics: The Foundation Formula; investing school district funds; bidding procedures and much more.

School improvement: Test the Students and Share the Results

Date: February 6, 2015 – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Jefferson City.
Presenters: Cyndi Hebenstreit – Director of Early Childhood Center, Maplewood-Richmond Heights

Topics: Understanding the MSIP5 scoring guides; Developing effective testing protocols; Practical ways to improve district scores; and Developing a data-driven decision model.

Public Relations: Is Anyone Listening to Me?

Date: March 25, 2015 – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Lodge of Four Seasons
Presenter: David Luther – Luther Communications 

Topics: Effective communication strategies; Understanding the power of social media Staff communication; Dealing with the media and Developing a communication plan.


Each of the sessions will cost $100 to attend and includes lunch and all handouts.  By registering for the entire series, attendees can save $25.
